Scraptastic Crochet Afghan

I have been crocheting like the wind to try to finish up all of my winter weather WiPs so scraptastic1that people can enjoy them while it’s still cold outside. Today I will be spotlighting what I am calling my Scraptastic Afghan. This is a super simple blanket that will help you use up all of your half skeins of yarn.

This is actually the second blanket I made using this pattern. The first one I made for my husband using yarn that he had bought me for Christmas last year. So his blanket is not technically Scraptastic since I had a color scheme in mind and full skeins of yarn dedicated to making it.

  • For the first blanket (pictured left) I used medium weight (4) yarn in colors Red Heart with Love in Black, White, and Berry Red, I also used Red Heart Super Saver in Heather Grey.
  • For my actual Scrap blanket I used every color that I had partial skeins for.
  • I used a size L/11 8.00mm hook for both blankets.

This was an awesome project for Netflix binge watching or crocheting while trying to have a conversation with someone. It is all done in Half Double Crochet stitch – and NO counting anything! This was my “I need to de-stress from stressful crochet patterns” project. This is very beginner friendly. The only unusual thing about this pattern is that you are working the stitches with 2 strands of yarn at the same time.scraptastic4

Another thing that I LOVED about this project is that I left my tails long at the color changes and crocheted over the top of them. So when I was done I had NO ends to sew in! I just went back over the blanket and snipped off any ends that were poking out.

The most efficient way that I found to crochet this project is to prep your yarn first. I separated the skeins into 2 piles – darker colors and lighter colors. Having a nice contrast between the two strands works best. Then I would just start making a ball. At completely scraptasticcansrandom times while winding the ball I would change colors. Here is my very Low Budget method for keeping the 2 strands of yarn from getting tangled while you work. I took 2 large clean coffee cans and plunked the balls of yarn into them. I would make the yarn balls big enough to just fit into the cans. Now I know that there are fancy yarn bowls out there, I’ve seen some gorgeous ones that are made out of wood. I just don’t like spending any money that could be allocated to buying yarn on anything that is not yarn. 🙂

I liked the way that they both came out. The blanket that I used the specific colors for has a nice almost marbled effect. While the blanket that I used every color I had came out more “Boho”, shabby chic, eclectic looking.

Using the medium weight yarn, this is a very thick, warm blanket. I can see this pattern being used to make throw rugs or chair pads too.

  3. YES! I’ve been looking for something easy to use my scrap yarn for. Bonus points for being able to watch TV or talk WHILE crocheting. 🙂 I love the use of the coffee cans…so smart! Your blankets are really beautiful!!

  7. I wish I had seen this before I donated all my left over balls of yarn to the senior center because I didn’t know what to do with all the odd ball colors. I’m going to send this link down to the lady that runs the center so she can share it with the ladies. It’s a great idea.

  8. I have a giant scrap yarn blanket going too!!! I’m working on a post now!!! I agreed, it is such a great de-stresser from the “this must be perfect” projects!

    • I love it! It is the best blanket ever. I ended up making 2 blankets like this one. I might even make another one for next winter. I’ll have to check out your post! 😀

      • LOL I love strange questions! I clicked on a link that was in the email notification that you followed me and it did go to what looked what you were describing as a college course. So then I think I clicked on the “about” page. WordPress is weird sometimes when people have old blogs and then create new ones. I just figure that at some point I would get an email when you make your next post and that would get me to what your current blog is. 😀
