Jumbo Size Crochet Bag

I chose some big big big colors for this Jumbo Size Crochet Bag. This bag is designed to carry some fun and happiness to everywhere you use it!

I decided to make a crocheted bag to send to my friend Ricci along with the Bright and Bold C2C Blanket that I made for her a few weeks ago. When I was trying to figure out what type of bag to make the only criteria I had in mind was I wanted it to be BIG and I wanted it to be COLORFUL.

BIG – this really is a jumbo sized bag. The mesh sections stretch nicely so she can stuff as much fun into it as she wants. Beach trips, picnics, and shopping trips are some of the fun things to use this bag for. It’s also big enough to transform grocery shopping and laundromat visits into something fun too!!!

COLORFUL – I used Red Heart Stripes yarn in Fruity Stripe along with Mainstays Basic Yarn in Purple. I know I’ve said the word fun a few billion times already but that is really the only word I can think of to describe these colors. They are so bright – I mean ridiculously bright. Not like neon but a rich brightness. I loved using this yarn and still have one whole skein leftover. I’m tucking that one away for if I’m ever feeling a little blue I can grab it and make a little something – or even just look at it for a little while to cheer me up!!

This bag was super easy to make. No pattern required. I used the standard method for making a circle with increases in every round for 16 rounds then a few more rounds to make the base. I did not join any of the rounds but used a stitch marker to mark the beginning stitch and DC’d in a continuous circle. The mesh is a round of SC, chain 5, skip 2, SC. Then in the subsequent rounds SC into chain 5 space, chain 5, SC into chain 5 space…… continue until you have as many rounds as you want.

I had mentioned the other day that I spent the first half of the month plopped in my very comfy recliner suffering from a nasty cold. Thankfully I had enough strength to crochet but couldn’t do much of anything else. Making this bag worked better than any cold medicine I was on. I think the excitement of making a new project combined with the happy bright colors did wonders for keeping my spirits up and my mood positive.

Now I’m not a doctor, but from experience I know and recommend that as soon as you feel a cold coming on grab some brightly colored yarn and a hook. Fix a nice hot cup of tea with honey and lemon in it. Set yourself up in a comfy chair, or the couch or bed and crochet until you feel better!!! πŸ˜€

Thanks for reading!!

  1. Those colors are great! I feel great when I work with bright colors, too. And it’s nice to make something you yourself have designed. A little ego boost goes a long way!

    • Thanks Karen!! I loved working with these colors! My next few projects are going to be using browns and tans which I like, but it’s just not the same as using bright happy colors. πŸ˜€

    • Thank you dear Cobs!!! The bright happy colors were so nice to work with while I was sick. I’m so glad I have some leftover yarn. I have it tucked away for when I need a little dose of bold color this winter. ❀ ❀ ❀

    • Thanks Kathy!! It is nice to be feeling well again but I’m not going to lie, it was kind of nice to just plop in the comfy chair and crochet with this yarn all day. I almost won’t mind getting sick again!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

      • I think sometimes we get sick because our brain’s need a rest as much as our bodies. I’ve not been truly down with a cold or anything for a long time, but my allergies do put a drain on my energy, and there are just some days (usually several in a row) where I just have no gumption. Sitting with a book or some handwork really can make a difference! I’m glad you had some quiet time, even if it was foisted upon you.

    • Thanks Rebecca!!! I know I used the words happy and fun a lot in this post but there really wasn’t any other way to describe it. It’s funny because I usually don’t go for such bright colors and I never wear anything very colorful but the past few months I can’t stop using big bright colors. I wonder if it’s my brain saying I need some extra happy. The next few projects I have to make are using browns and tans and I’m honestly not as excited to start on them. By the way – I finished the graphgan and hubby LOVED it. I just need to take some pictures and write up a post. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

  3. Can’t go wrong with bright colors. I like the straps. I think I have some rings lying around here somewhere. I’m pretty sure I rescued some from some purses I threw away. I’ve been thinking about how to design the crochet kit bag for my students. Those straps just might work… πŸ™‚

    • Thanks Yolanda!! I found those rings in the bottom of one of my stash boxes. I had forgotten all about them. I loved working with the bright colors. It really helped cheer me up while I was making this. That is really clever to salvage rings from old purses. I hadn’t thought of that. But then again I have carried the same purse for at least the last 5 years. It might be time to get a new one, or maybe crochet a new one!!!! πŸ˜€

  4. What a great bag! The colours would certainly have cheered you up and made something good and positive out of the frustration and misery of being sick! Being currently in the clutches of a nasty flu myself, I will have to try it, though my crochet skills still need a lot of polishing!!! Hope you are feeling much better now ! xxx

    • Thanks Theresa!! It’s miserable being sick with a cold especially when you feel too drained to do anything. Being able to at least sit with my bright yarn and finish a quick easy project really helped me to feel better instead of just focusing on feeling crappy. It was a happy distraction! πŸ˜€

    • Thank you so much!! It was a really fun project to make. I find crochet to be very relaxing most of the time but there are plenty of projects that do need a bit more patience. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
